What is a Mala?

A Mala is a string of beads used for meditation. Mala's are also known as "prayer beads". Mala's hold a specific intention to help the person who wears their mala stay connected to anything they are trying to work towards. Whether it be a life goal, a habit trying to overcome, or a feeling they want to keep with them. Mala's can have stone or wood beads, and they can either have knots in between the beads or not. Knots in between the beads carry an extra intention setting due to when the knots are tied a special mantra is said along with them.

Why 108 beads?

There are many theories as to why 108 beads. Here are a few of my favorite listed:
  • 1 represents the Moon, 0 represents the Earth, and 8 (infinity symbol) represents the Sun
  • There are 108 marma points (Ayurveda for reflexology) in the body
  • The diameter of the Earth times 108 equals the diameter of the Sun
  • There are 54 characters in Sanskrit, each with male and female which equals 108
  • There are 108 Upanishads (ancient Sanskrit texts that contain some of the central philosophical concepts and ideas of Hinduism)
  • The distance between the Sun and Earth is the diameter of the Sun times 108

This is open to your interpretation! Choose which theory you like best.

How to Use Your Mala

First thing to do is cleanse your mala! Although I have personally set an intention in each mala based on the stone used, it's good to cleanse your mala so your can also set your own intention. Use palo santo or sage to smudge the stones and then say your intention.

Using your Mala in meditation practice helps you keep count of your mantra. Hold your mala in your hand and use your thumb and first finger to feed the beads through. With every bead, say your mantra. This can be anything, be creative! Once you've reached the guru bead (the very last bead) and tassel, use this time as a reflection.
